Lower Kananaskis
DescriptionThere is an upper and lower Kananaskis Lakes. The upper is a smaller beautiful mountain lake. Tthe lower lake is equally beautiful lake but is much longer. The one caveat here is that you will see more human activity on the lower lake in the form of motor boats (not many) cabins on the lake, etc.
Levelbeginner to Intermediate - dependent on weather conditions.
Distance7.6 Km from the north end to the south end.
Duration:There are numerous distances one can paddle. One could easily make an entire day of exploring the various bays and shorelines or it would be a nice afternoon or morning paddle for shorter distances. This would not be a good location for a multiple day trip.
Access (Land Agency)This lake is located in Peter Lougheed provincial park.
DirectionsOne can either come from Calgary on the trans Canada highway and the then turn south on highway 40 (Kananaskis Trail) or come from Lethbridge take highway 2 north turn shortly after Nantan to go to the Bar-U Ranch to highway 22, turn north to Longview on 22. Turn west on Kananaskis Trail (highway 40).
Turn west on Kananaskis Lakes Trail - Then go past Elkwood campground. Look for a road going to the Lake (sign) right just before Boulton Creek Campground. Be prepared for a long haul to beach (best have a kayak cart for this). There may very well be better places.... Special NotesNA
